The restaurant where I drank my first legal beer will hold a special place in my heart forever. I occupied the third booth from the front on that auspicious occasion, but in those days the booths were all wood.
Anton's closed this spring to allow for redecorating, then reopened under the new management of Tom Anton, son of the restaurant's founder. The restaurant looks a bit more upscale, with brighter, brick-hued colors over the original stucco walls and a bit more upholstery. But it retains the ambience that has attracted local patrons for more than 40 years.

ANTON'S EMBRACES NOSTALGIA
More than just the facade is changing at Anton's Restaurant. It's got a new couple at the helm. But they're not new to the restaurant itself or the local scene.
It's Tom and Tena Anton and they're returning to the restaurant Tom Anton grew up in. His dad, Bill Anton, started the business about 1960. It's been through various incarnations, including Irving Park Delicatessen and Cellar Anton's and many renovations. And it's where Tom Anton learned the ins and outs of the business before striking out on his own with two other restaurants, IPD Eatery, which he later sold to his brothers, and Mid City Oyster Bar, which the Anton's closed last month so he could return to Anton's.
